Welcome to jamesmcguane.com !
This marks our shift to using the artist’s name – rather than setting up a distinct domain name for each book, film or art project that comes along. Our other existing site thehuntedwhale.com will eventually be annexed to this one.
The impetus for this shift is the release of our third book:
The Race: Inside the Indy 500
Skyhorse Publishing / Sports Publishing
May 2016
That's the great Mario Andretti at the 100th running of this great American auto race. The race took place at the Indianapolis, Indiana racetrack on May 29th. (The race was won by Andretti Herta Autosport rookie driver Alexander Rossi)
The Race: Inside the Indy 500 Over a twelve year period, James McGuane visited the Memorial Day race eight times with camera and notepad. The yield tallys up to over 5000 Ektachrome (film) images and 2000 digital pictures. None of the hundreds of selected pictures have been previously published. The result is a true “inside look” at open-wheel IndyCar racing in the early years of the 21st century.
Dozens of amazing stories, anecdotes and recollections of “the racing life” are found among the “winning Indy 500 driver interviews”. Every living 500 winner agreed to be interviewed. Invariably, their answers to questions and other comments are bold and honest. There is little of the rote “sound bite” response that we’ve come to recognize in the broadcast media. There, “thank yous” and acknowledgement for car, engine, team, sponsors, fans and family glibly roll from the tongue of the driver. Here, the drivers are given the opportunity to speak freely - and they do!
